MONUSCO have decided to relocate their non-critical staff from the town of Goma. The situation in Goma is indeed very concerning. Several United Nations soldiers have been reported dead, and the South African contingent's Ministry of Defense reported that 8 soldiers were killed and several injured. M23 issued a 48-hour warning on Saturday, January 25, requesting the FARDC and their militias to lay down their arms and surrender. Some sources reported that FDLR commander Omega Pacifique Ntawunguka was killed in Virunga Park during the fight around Kanyamahoro, north of Goma, on Friday, January 24. There are fears that Goma could fall under M23 control, as the rebels have already captured several nearby towns and are closing in on the city.
